This year I have made an important decision about my career. I have decided to jump in financial planning world with exclusive products from Allianz Life Indonesia. This is probably my other bold career move after my temporary break from corporate world.

A bold move because not only it’s totally different from my professional background but also it is one of underdog careers in Indonesia, or so they say. Try telling the person next to you that you are insurance agent. Granted, he will run for his life in a blink of an eye.

Is it really that bad?

Yes, it is.

Since this is my career choice, I have to focus and catch up. Everyday is a learning process and deep down I know I am not going to be just an ordinary agent. My official title is financial consultant and that’s the service I am providing.

I started filling up my timeline with insurance news. The fact is a lot of my friends don’t have the right idea about insurance. Many of them don’t even know why they have insurance. They end up paying two to three premiums at three different insurance companies not knowing what are all that for or not realizing whether their choice of protections are going to be helpful or not when needed.

Besides social medias, I also started to talk in person or through messages with my close friends and family. Their reactions? priceless 😀

I am grateful for those who are open minded and willing to listen, and learn humbly. But rejections and sometimes insults are also thrown at me. I was mocked, was laughed at, and accused of being so desperate to close the deal. There were times I asked my husband, “did I look that desperate? did they really think if they didn’t take my advice that I was going to be broke or die?”. I pushed it because it is important for me that my friends get the best protection, because if they don’t, it makes me not only a bad consultant but also a bad friend.

Of course, not everyone buys that reasoning. At the end of the day all I could say is that the protection that I recommend for them is helpful for them not for me. If the life risks hit, it is they and their family who will get affected, not mine. So the decision will always theirs and not mine.

I am still working out my time management, but I will share more of my interesting journey as financial consultant :)

    Good luck with your new profession. It’s hard to sell someone something they don’t think they need, though they didn’t have to be rude and laugh at you.
