The Mommy Brain: A Promise I Can’t Keep

Back in August I did a post announcing excitedly that I had just bought two books, one of them was The Mommy Brain, and I promised to write the review once I finished. Well here’s the truth: I never got to finish reading them. In fact I don’t think I will ever get to the end of the story especially for The Mommy Brain. I got to the last page but only after skipping like almost half of the entire book.

The Mommy Brain, from the appearance, has a very interesting cover (and title). As a mom you will straight away snatch this book from the shelf upon it’s striking pink color and of course the title that goes “The Mommy Brain, How Motherhood Makes Us Smarter”. Really?

I tried to keep up for the first few pages. But I think Katherine Ellison had done the book very scientifically that I couldn’t understand what she was trying to say. It was like listening to a broken radio. And then your head started to spinning. You realized that book had this hypnotizing spiral to put you asleep before you knew it. Hmm..in this case, I doubt that motherhood has made me smarter.

One thing I could catch up was that this whole idea of motherhood makes us smarter was mostly based on research toward mouses (not all). They watched these mouses brain and how it was developing once it got pregnant and then had the baby. Actually there are tons of the word ‘mouse’ in it I lost my way to talk about it.

Katherine did say in her book that as a mother our senses have become more sensitive and we are able to multi-skill. I couldn’t agree more on this. Also it was kind of a wake up call for me because until I read The Mommy Brain I never realized there were mothers out there who seriously thought their brain decreasing once they got baby. Hence I really appreciate of how Katherine in her book tried to tell to these mothers “no, you are not stupid moms! You are even smarter, thanks to your babies”.

My lack of understanding (and interest) on this book was probably because I was reading the translated version of it and it was very poorly translated. If you are interested to read more why don’t get yourself one copy of The Mommy Brain: How Motherhood Makes Us Smarter

Maybe then you can explain to me what was it all about :)

    LOL…. :D
It will eventually, but only for some specific points, I agree. Sadly, it won’t make us able to be really smart in math lol… :D

I don’t think motherhood makes us smarter cos all the brain cells are drained away due to the sleepless nights… don’t even talk about thinking straight!
