Since I am one of those lazy cooks who can only cook edible things when in the mood, every food is a celebration no matter how easy and simple it is. So I want you to meet our star for today: TEMPEH. If anyone of you have watched one of the episode in Oprah you would probably recognize this special soy bean cake. In that episode, they mix tempe with penne. Although I couldn’t imagine how it would taste but I was proud that my native food is getting worldwide exposure.
Tempeh (local pronounciation: tempe) is made out of fermented soy. It is almost similar to the firm vegetarian burger patty. In Indonesia it is often served fried or made as spicy fried tempeh. As a soy product you can bet that it is healthy and tasty too.
Here is how we make an easy and healthy fried tempeh (locally: tempe goreng):
1 Tempeh block, slices thinly
1 Garlic, crushed and minced
1/2 Chicken stock cube
A quarter cup of water
Pinch of salt
Pinch of pepper
Oil to deep fry
How to make:
1. Mix garlic, chicken stock, water, salt and pepper.
2. Soak the tempeh slices in the mixture for five minutes
3. Heat the oil to enough temperature for deep fry
4. Deep fry the tempeh until the color becomes brown and the texture is crisp
5. Serve hot
It can be enjoyed as a snack or with rice.
Enjoy your meal and happy valentine’s day
