Blog Awards, Are They Truly Awarding or a Burden?

Blog Awards, Are They Truly Awarding or a Burden?
February 18, 2012 CuteCoco

Although I have been blogging for years (using various form), not until after I joined some society like Blog Frog and Mom Blog Society that I gained more blogger friends and they are all fabulously friendly. Soon after I started to receive blog awards. The first one was in October 2011 which was my first Versatile Blogger Award. It gave me butterflies on my stomach because I have never had received any kind of blog awards and I considered that as a sign that my blog was finally being noticed by others.

Some weeks ago I had come across a blog post that was questioning the meaning of a blog awards. The comments on that post were varied but most of them felt a bit annoyed when they had to receive one. That made me thinking why so much trouble?

I still remember the feeling of being lonely and living in a solitary when looking at other blogs celebrating their awards and wondering when my turn would come. It has come and whichever intention behind it, I was happy. I still am.

For me, a blog award is a sign of recognition. When someone handed you an award you were definitely within her space which meant he knew you, he knew your blog, he had read your blog and he liked it. Regardless he wanted a link back to his site as a form of gratitude.

Some people think that a blog award is only a form a building followers and one of ways to get backlinks. Maybe it is, so what? That doesn’t mean the award lose it’s meaning all at once. It will lose it’s meaning completely when you start questioning what’s the intention behind it, why that person handed you the award, whether you really deserve it and so on. Do that and you miss all the fun.

Blog awards often come with a set of question or task that needs to be done and that it requires you to pass it along. For some bloggers with lots of blogger friends this requirement leave them in dilemma because they don’t want to choose some of their friends and hurt the others who weren’t chosen. If it bothers a lot well my advise is simple, don’t claim the award.

Having said all the above, my stand for blog awards has been always the same: they are awarding and not a burden. I like to play along and share the love too. To be able to pass an award on to the other blogs is a rewarding feeling by itself. However I know that I always have the choice to not play along. If I know that I won’t be able to do the post I simply won’t claim the award but leaving a thank you note on the comment field of the blog who is passing the award on to me.

Well that’s on me. What about you? What do you think of blog awards? I am participating at Friendship Friday over at Create with Joy. Go see her blog and join the hop. It’s fun! :)

The hardest part of receiving a blog award is when you need to pass it along to others. It gave me headache.. 😛

But then again it’s always a big compliment if someone gave you one, for whatever reason they had.

Like you I was so thrilled that someone read my blog and liked it enough to give me an award, made up or not!
The only burden part of it was picking who to pass it on to! There are so many great bloggers and I didn’t want to pick just a handful to give the award to!

Yeah very true, but on the other hand it is also fun to browse look around the other blogs to find those who deserve the award. Making connection. Thanks for reading this :)
